The sequel to the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finally received a release date. Disney head Bob Iger announced at a shareholders meeting today that Episode VIII will be hitting the silver screen on May 26, 2017. Iger also confirmed the previous reports that Looper and Breaking Bad writer/director Rian Johnson would write and direct the next film in the mega-franchise.
Another big reveal by Iger was regarding the Star Wars spinoff movie, telling the audience it is to begin filming this summer, and yes, Felicity Jones is in fact in the starring role. The spinoff has been officially dubbed Rogue One. Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards will be directing, and Cinderella scribe Chris Weitz will be writing the film.
Little else is known about the spin-off film, but in the Star Wars universe, Rouge One is the call sign for the leader of the Rouge Squadron, as seen in The Empire Strikes Back.
