Nintendo’s struggling Wii U finally received some good news this week as Mario Kart 8 is off to a stellar start so far, selling an impressive 1.2 million copies since it’s worldwide release on May 29th and May 30th. The latest entry in Nintendo’s flagship kart racing series is currently enjoying glowing reviews, and now has excellent sales to go along with it, easily becoming the fastest selling Wii U game so far.
Nintendo Of America President Reggie Fils-Aime was very happy with this news, responding “The early response to Mario Kart 8 demonstrates that the best days for the Wii U are still ahead” and adding “This year’s E3 is just days away, and it will be all about the future games for Nintendo platforms. This milestone is a great place to start.”
The success of the latest release have also helped push the franchise past 100 million copies sold, another milestone for the series. Mario Kart Wii is currently the highest-selling in the series by far, leading with a hefty 35.53 million units sold.
While Wii U sales have been sluggish, to say the least (6.2 million as of May 24th 2014) the quick start for Mario Kart 8 will allow Nintendo to breathe a temporary sigh of relief in the days leading up to E3 2014.
