As Warner Bros continues to set up their DC film universe, things seem to be particularly heating up for their upcoming Suicide Squad adaptation in terms of casting. The latest casting rumor just might be the biggest.
According to The Wrap, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad movie is circling Dallas Buyers Club star Jared Leto to play The Joker.
The Wrap claims that Ryan Gosling was wanted for the role, but declined due to not wanting to appear in multiple sequels.
Jared Leto on the other hand, seems to be unopposed to the idea of appearing in multiple films for the DC film universe. Leto himself was previously gunning to play Marvel’s Doctor Strange, a role which ultimately went to Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch, although Marvel has yet to confirm it themselves.
Worth nothing is that The Joker did not originally appear in writer Justin Marks original draft of the Suicide Squad screenplay, Ayer is working on a rewrite which will now include The Clown Prince Of Crime, serving as his introduction to the new series of DC films.
The eccentric Leto himself seems to be a good fit for The Joker, and is fresh off a highly acclaimed performance in Dallas Buyers Club that ended up with him winning an Oscar.
The last live-action adaptation of The Joker as we all know, was played by the late Heath Ledger in 2008’s The Dark Knight. Ledger’s role was considered to be one of cinemas great performances, and went on to posthumously receive an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Heath would be a hard act to follow up, but Leto is an inspired choice to take on the role.
Suicide Squad is due for release on August 5th 2016.
